We are seven students from Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen, who embark on the Humboldt Journey in Spring 2014. Accompanied by an industrial container we are traveling to Cape Town, South Africa. The container will be located in the heart of Cape Town. We will conduct hands-on research on social innovation issues, challenging the borders between art and social sciences. Having Wilhelm’s spirit and Alexander’s wanderlust as a role model, we follow the footsteps of the Humboldt brothers.
In seven independent research projects we observe different aspects of society. Topics range from volunteer tourism to investment patterns and social exclusion. Our team consists of students with backgrounds in economics, political sciences and cultural sciences. Hence we will be working interdisciplinary. The research projects are linked to chairs and research initiatives of Zeppelin University as well as corporations, NGO‘s and think tanks from Germany and South Africa.
How to design public space with participation?
Our experiment will investigate this question. With open participation formats we want to get involved people around the container space and become a vivid and creative atmosphere which includes everybody. The Humboldt Container is the heart of the public space intervention. It is a social laboratory and an outpost of Zeppelin University. It makes local research possible and carries a little piece of our university into the world. At Zeppelin University we are familiar with containers and their marvelous character of interim solutions as we have half of our campus in containers. Interim arrangements promise new spaces for different ideas and offer a high flexibility. Through and with our Humboldt Container we combine science and art, two approaches to the observation of society. On the one hand, the container will serve as a laboratory. On the other hand it will be a social intervention itself as a meeting place in the heart of Cape Town.
